✨Scholar of Shaam Series - Part 4 ✨ Sheikh Shukri al-Luhafi شيخ شكري بن أحمد اللحفي (1920 – 2015) Born in Damascus in 1920, Sheikh Shukri al-Luhafi began memorising the Qur’an at the age of nine and grew to become one of the most respected scholars of Shām. A master reciter, jurist, calligrapher, poet, and spiritual guide of the Shādhilī path, he was known for his humility, asceticism, and deep devotion. He authored several works, including تحفة العصر في علم القراءات العشر الصغرى والكبرى و القراءات الأربع الشاذة — a comprehensive text on Qur’anic recitations — and المروج الخضر في براعم الشعر, a collection of his poetry. 🕌 Scholars of Shaam Series - Part 2 Shaykh Abdul Razzaq al-Halabi (1925–2012) 🌟 Shaykh Abdul Razzaq al-Halabi, known as the Maqriʾ of Damascus and Shaykh of the Umayyad Mosque, was one of the foremost scholars of Qur’an and Islamic sciences in Syria. 🍃 Born in Damascus in 1925, he memorised the Qur’an at a young age and studied under leading scholars, most notably Shaykh Muhammad Salih al-Farfour, with whom he helped establish al-Fath Islamic Institute. ✨ He received ijaazah in the Qur’anic readings (qirāʾāt) and in various Islamic sciences from great scholars of Shaam. For more than sixty years, he taught in the Umayyad Mosque, beginning his lessons in 1949, and became its official Imam and later Shaykh al-Jāmiʿ al-Umawī. Through his decades of teaching and Qur’an recitation, he trained and certified hundreds of students, leaving a legacy of knowledge, devotion, and service to the Qur’an. He passed away in Damascus in 2012, رحمه الله. 📍At Itqan Institure, we proudly continue the tradition of these great scholars. 🕌 Tajweed Tip from Itqan Institute 🎙 Heavy & Light Letters in Qur’an Recitation One of the most essential parts of Tajweed is knowing which letters are “heavy” (مفخّمة) and which are “light” (مرقّقة) — and giving each its due right in recitation. 🌟 Tip of the Day: 🎯 Give each letter its proper weight — don’t overdo it, and don’t flatten what should be emphasized. 🔹 Heavy Letters (تفخيم): These have a deep, echo-like sound. Always pronounced with a full mouth. خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ 🔁 Also ر can be heavy or light, depending on the context. ➡ Example: قال = Qāl (not Qal) — the ق is heavy. 🔹 Light Letters (ترقيق): Pronounced softly, with the tongue relaxed and mouth not filled. All letters except the 7 heavy ones are light by default. ➡ Example: كِتاب = Kitāb (not Keetāb) — the ك is light. ✅ Train your tongue to balance the weight of each letter. That’s how we beautify the Qur’an — by precision, not just melody. ⚠️ Be Careful When They’re Neighbors!
